Sri Lanka vs. Other South Asian Film Locations: A Practical Comparison for Commercial Productions

When a commercial production team is deciding where to shoot in South or Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka is increasingly in the conversation — but rarely the first name on the list. India, Thailand, Bali, and the Maldives tend to come up first because they're more familiar. This guide is for the decision-stage conversation: a direct, practical comparison of Sri Lanka against the markets it actually competes with, across the dimensions that matter to a production team and a client signing off on a location budget.

At Clear we produce photography and videography in Sri Lanka year-round and have worked alongside international productions that considered multiple markets before arriving here. Here is what the comparison actually looks like in practice.

1. Sri Lanka vs. India: Visual Range vs. Infrastructure Scale

India offers infrastructure scale that Sri Lanka cannot match — Bollywood-adjacent crews, massive studio facilities, deep pools of supporting talent, and a production services industry built for large-format productions. For campaigns that require scale — hundreds of extras, elaborate set construction, multi-city shoots — India has real advantages.

Sri Lanka's advantage over India is visual compression. Within a two-hour radius of Colombo, a production can access hill country, coastline, ancient ruins, colonial architecture, and contemporary urban environments. In India, achieving that range requires a multi-city itinerary that adds significant production days and budget. For most mid-scale commercial productions — brand films, supply chain content, lifestyle shoots — Sri Lanka's geography delivers more visual variety per shoot day than any comparable region in India.

Production in Sri Lanka is also significantly less logistically complex than production across multiple Indian states. Permit structures, tax regimes, and labour regulations vary by state in India in ways that routinely complicate multi-location shoots. Sri Lanka operates under a single national framework, which simplifies planning considerably.

2. Sri Lanka vs. Thailand: Cost and Crew Quality

Thailand has been the default choice for international commercial productions in the region for years — Bangkok's production infrastructure is deep, crew quality is high, and the country is familiar to international producers. For productions already established in the Thai market, staying there is the path of least resistance.

The case for choosing production in Sri Lanka over Thailand comes down to differentiation and cost. Thai landscapes — beaches, temples, street markets — are heavily associated with a particular visual palette that consumers have seen in thousands of commercials. Sri Lanka's visual environment is less saturated in commercial advertising, which means content shot here still feels specific rather than generic. A tea estate, a gem mine, a colonial fort, or a stilted fisherman off the Galle coast looks like nowhere else — because most audiences have not seen it used commercially.

On cost, Sri Lanka is typically twenty to thirty percent cheaper than Thailand for equivalent crew and location quality, with day rates for senior crew positions particularly competitive. Equipment availability in Colombo is not as deep as Bangkok, but for most mid-range commercial productions — the camera systems, lens packages, and lighting rigs required — the gap is manageable, particularly for international teams willing to supplement with targeted imports under ATA Carnet.

3. Sri Lanka vs. Maldives: Production Depth vs. Spectacular Simplicity

The Maldives does one thing exceptionally well: underwater and overwater imagery in a setting of extreme natural beauty. For productions where that visual register is the brief — resort advertising, luxury lifestyle, marine conservation content — the Maldives is hard to argue against.

The limitation is range. The Maldives offers almost no visual diversity outside of ocean, reef, and resort environments. Crew, accommodation, and logistics are expensive by any regional standard. Equipment must be flown in. And the permit environment for commercial filming, while manageable, requires advance coordination with the Maldivian Film Office.

Sri Lanka offers comparable ocean and coastal imagery — including world-class surf, whale watching, and beach environments — alongside the full visual range of the interior. For productions that need a coastal chapter and a heritage chapter and an operational chapter within a single campaign, Sri Lanka is not a compromise; it is the only market where all of those things are available within reasonable production logistics.

🎬  FROM OUR TEAM We've had clients come to us having originally scoped their production in Thailand or the Maldives. The shift to Sri Lanka typically happens when they realise the brief has more visual range than their original location can deliver. A recent campaign needed coast, heritage architecture, and operational factory footage — three registers that would have required three separate market engagements anywhere else in the region. In Sri Lanka, we handled all of it in five days across two locations. That is the structural advantage that videography and photography in Sri Lanka offers for multi-register campaigns.

4. Sri Lanka vs. Bali: Authenticity and Permit Complexity

Bali's production scene has matured rapidly, driven by the volume of international content being shot there. Crew quality is good, the local infrastructure is strong, and the visual environment — rice terraces, temples, volcanic landscapes — is genuinely compelling. The challenge is saturation: Bali has been shot so heavily by international brands that finding a visual angle that doesn't look like a travel Instagram account requires significant creative effort.

Sri Lanka's visual environment is less commercially saturated. The cultural sites are less internationally familiar, which means they carry more narrative weight for audiences encountering them for the first time. The production infrastructure is comparable to Bali for mid-range commercial shoots, and the cost structure is similar. The practical differentiator is the ability to shoot diverse environments without the high-season crowd problem that increasingly affects Bali's most-photographed locations.

Permit complexity is comparable between the two markets. Both require advance coordination for heritage sites, nature reserves, and drone operations. Sri Lanka's process, handled by an experienced local production partner, is manageable within a standard pre-production timeline.

5. Where Sri Lanka Wins: The Decisive Factors

Across the comparison, several factors consistently favour Sri Lanka for commercial productions:

Visual compression: no comparable market in the region offers the same diversity of landscape, architecture, and cultural environment within a single island's geography. For multi-register campaigns, this is a decisive structural advantage.

Authenticity and differentiation: Sri Lanka's commercial environment is less visually saturated than Thailand, Bali, or India. Content shot here still reads as specific and original rather than generic and familiar.

English proficiency: management-level English across the Sri Lankan workforce — including factory workers in some sectors — enables interview-led content and direct communication between international creative teams and local subjects without the translation overhead required in most regional markets.

Cost efficiency: day rates, location fees, accommodation, and catering are consistently competitive. For brands with recurring production needs in the region, Sri Lanka delivers strong cost-per-asset performance.

6. Where Sri Lanka Has Ground to Make Up

Honest assessment: Sri Lanka's production infrastructure has real gaps relative to more established markets. Studio facilities in Colombo are limited by Bangkok or Mumbai standards. The deep pool of below-the-line crew available in Indian production centres is not yet matched here. And the permit process, while manageable, requires more lead time than most international producers initially expect.

For very large-scale productions — major automotive spots, high-concept brand films requiring extensive set construction, or projects requiring hundreds of extras — Sri Lanka may not be the right primary market. The production ecosystem is built for mid-scale commercial work, not for the logistical weight of a forty-person international production.

For the majority of commercial photography and videography commissions — brand films, supply chain content, employer brand campaigns, lifestyle shoots, editorial and e-commerce production — Sri Lanka is a fully viable and frequently superior choice. The question is whether your team has the production relationships on the ground to execute it properly.

7. The Verdict for Decision-Stage Production Teams

If your production needs visual range, cost efficiency, English-speaking talent, authentic environments that aren't yet commercially saturated, and a manageable permit landscape — Sri Lanka deserves serious consideration against any other market in the region. It is not a compromise choice; for the right brief, it is the right choice.

If your production needs the deepest possible infrastructure, the largest pool of specialised crew, or studio facilities at international standard — supplement Sri Lanka with a production partner in India or Thailand rather than replacing it. The most effective approach for large multi-market campaigns is often a combination: studio and scale work in Bangkok or Mumbai, location and authenticity work in Sri Lanka.

Production in Sri Lanka is no longer the unknown quantity it was for international commercial teams ten years ago. The crews, the equipment, the permit infrastructure, and the production companies that know how to navigate it are all in place. What it requires is the right partner and the right brief.
